Ich kopiere mal einen Facebook-Kommentar von Allan zum Thema "vegan aus Umweltschutzgründen" hier rein:

"That people care enough about the environment (desertification/climate change) to promote a vegetarian diet because they want to take action is well intentioned. However it is tragic for the wildlife I love - and that you Sanjayan said you loved when you stayed with me in Africa. As you know we are experiencing horrific rhino and elephant poaching – horns sawn off and dozens of elephants dying miserable deaths poisoned with cyanide. With desertification and biodiversity loss so severe in our nearby national parks (that I did not get to show you) – man-made droughts & floods increasing, poverty, social breakdown and violence and 90% unemployment - anyone should understand poachers risking their lives to support their families when offered money by wealthy Chinese. The greatest threat to the wildlife is mot the poachers trying to feed their families but the public vilification of livestock and support for the management policies directly causing desertification, not only in Africa but in America as we see with California’s man-made droughts and now floods and landslides. That is why I showed a National Park in New Mexico desertifying as badly as anything in Africa during a TED talk on desertification http://on.ted.com/Savory I live about half a mile from the Aldo Leopold Memorial Forest on the Rio Grande river in N. Mexico that is notable for its dead oxidizing grass plants, fire danger, desertification and lack of wildlife. All management endorsed and supported by good people in ignorance and blind belief that resting land and protecting it from large animals is good. Why is it that intelligent people seem unable to see that management resulting in cattle in industrial feedlots or clearing tropical forests to plant grass for cattle is simply stupid – doing damage to environment, health and economy. And that management is stupid when advocating removing cattle from environments where the soil, soil life and vegetation all built up over billions of years with vast masses of large grazing animals and predators. Why is it that media, scientists, public constantly blame cattle and do not see management that is reductionist and not holistic is the problem? Surely we can collectively show more intelligence?Only when public understanding increases to the point we accept that management not livestock is at fault can we begin to seriously address the loss of wildlife, poverty,, violence and all the symptoms of desertification as well as climate change"
